TANJORE PAINTING
Thanjavur painting is a classical South Indian painting style, which was inaugurated from the town of Thanjavur.Thanjavur paintings are characterised by rich, flat and vivid colors, simple iconic composition, glittering gold foils overlaid on delicate but extensive gesso work and inlay of glass beads and pieces or very rarely precious and semi-precious gems.Thanjavur paintings not only have prominence in India, but also have their stand internationally, the British and Victorial & Albertmuseums in England house a large collection of Thanjavur paintings and the National Museum of Copenhagen also houses a fine collection of Thanjavur paintings.The world’s first language is art, Thanjavur paintings are a magnificently beautiful form of painting unique in their own way.Tanjore paintings can often be seen adoring our living rooms and corporate office walls and never fails to grab our attention for a minute.
The process of making Tanjore painting requires minute detailing and involves many stages.The Tanjore paintings were deep rooted in tradition, innovation was limited and the artists kept the technique of making these paintings as a close secret. But as years passed and the numbers of artists for Tanjore painters were limited, the artists were forced to reveal the technique and soon these paintings found a place in palaces apart from the traditional temples.
